October Chapter Meeting: Understanding the IRA
Plus Committee Updates and Our Upcoming Chapter Elections
Understanding the IRA October Chapter Meeting Tuesday, October 17th @ 7pm on Zoom
This month we are so excited to learn about the IRA from our very own Karen Harrington of the Legislative Committee!
Our October chapter meeting is your opportunity to answer the burning question - when it comes to climate change do my individual actions matter?
YES! Emissions from our buildings are the second largest source of GHG emissions (transportation is #1). And thanks to federal and state legislation, there is tremendous opportunity for you to lower those emissions while at the same time making your home more comfortable, safer, and less expensive for your family.
The federal Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), and Oregon state climate legislation are all in place to show you how to get started with advice and financial support on where to start, how to find qualified contractors, and how to access generous tax rebates and upfront incentives.
Hope to see you on October 17, ready to begin your journey to a more resilient and climate friendly home!
Get Involved: Upcoming Elections for Chapter Leadership Roles
We are voting for a new leadership team in November, and we hope you will get involved! This is a great way to understand what our Chapter is doing and affect positive change in our community. Leadership Team members spend a few hours each month supporting the Chapter.
We will review the details of each position and the self-nomination process at this month’s meeting. Additionally, we will send an email describing each position, the election timeline, and instructions for self-nomination. If you are unable to attend next week’s meeting but are interested in joining the leadership team, you will have all the information you need.
Leadership Roles in 2024:
Co-Chair 1 and Co-Chair 2, Secretary, Technical/Operations Lead, Communications Lead, Engagement Lead, and Event Lead.
Self-nominations will be accepted Wednesday, October 18 through Sunday, November 5.
Did you know it’s Sustainable Buildings Week?
We recommend checking out this event because of the amazing speakers, and the historic building which is a true "zero energy building” which may soon be amplified to be a resiliency hub!

Last, but not least: You may have heard that Governor Kotek assigned a Housing Production Advisory Council to make a plan to dramatically increase housing in Oregon. If you're wondering how climate action and housing development can go hand in hand, check out ZERO Coalition's blog for recommendations that can be adopted to ensure the state meets both its housing supply and building decarbonization goals. Click on each topic -- Air quality, Resiliency, Workforce, Zoning, and Costs, for the full position papers.
