SB 1187 would create a Climate SuperFund funded by collecting money from fossil fuel companies based on their greenhouse gas emissions. The superfund would be used for state resiliency plans that help Oregonians adapt to and mitigate the effects of climate change.
We urgently need the funding this bill would provide for community resiliency in the face of climate fires, worsening heat waves, and extreme storms urgent and to fund climate adaptation measures, such as wetland and riparian area protection, upgrades to transportation and electric power grids, and home and building retrofits. SB 1187 dedicates 40% of the funds collected to frontline communities most exposed to climate damages, and 30% of funds specifically to making Oregon more resilient to wildfires.
The bill is modeled on laws already on the books in Vermont and New York, and would require the fossil fuel firms most responsible for the problem to pay damages arising from climate change during 1995 - 2024 in proportion to their documented negative impact.
Unfortunately, the opposition to this bill is out in full force, with commenters calling climate change "nonsense” and “a hoax.”
Please use your voice to speak up for climate reality and support the Climate Superfund!

I live in [your city] and I’m a member of Climate Reality Project Portland Chapter who cares about [climate solutions, climate justice, the health of our environment, having a healthy world for my children and grandchildren…]. Please support SB 1187. We need funds to develop and put in place climate resilience, adaptation, and mitigation across Oregon, and fossil fuel companies who are mostly responsible for the problem should pay for it.
